Exports in Scandinavia

In 2021, quinoa exports in Scandinavia soared to X tons, increasing by 30% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 243%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 193%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), generating a 21% share of total exports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the quinoa exports, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden increased by +59 percentage points.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest quinoa supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In Sweden, quinoa exports increased at an average annual rate of +42.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -7.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Sweden amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-2.1%).

Quinoa Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, overseas purchases of quinoa decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Denmark (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) represented the largest importers of quinoa in 2021, amounting to approx. 43% and 35% of total imports, respectively. Norway (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Finland (11%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest quinoa importing markets in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X), together accounting for 88% of total imports. Finland lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 11%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Norway ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) and Finland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
