Cows Skin Market Size in Scandinavia
In 2021, the Scandinavia cows skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Denmark (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cows skin production, accounting for 62% of total volume. Moreover, cows skin production in Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Norway (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Finland (X tons), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Denmark was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Norway (+8.9% per year) and Finland (-8.0% per year).

Exports in Scandinavia
In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -16.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cows skin exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Norway represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), together generating a 47% share of total exports.
Norway was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of bovine animals exports, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012 to 2021. Finland (-2.2%), Sweden (-17.0%) and Denmark (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Norway and Finland increased by +47 and +6.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest cows skin supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden amounted to -6.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Norway (+24.8% per year) and Denmark (-24.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate slight growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia
In 2021, overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -64.4% to X kg, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 169% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cows skin imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports faced a sharp descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Denmark was the main importer of raw hides and skins of bovine animals in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports finishing at X kg, which was near 45% of total imports in 2021. Iceland (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 29% share, followed by Norway (18%) and Finland (4.6%). Sweden (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Iceland (with a CAGR of +125.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and Denmark ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 92% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Iceland and Finland, which together accounted for a further 8.1%.
Iceland, with a CAGR of +138.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -84.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 471% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+46.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
