In 2022, overseas shipments of raw silk decreased by -57.4% to X kg, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 557% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X kg in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, raw silk exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 563%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X kg, which reached 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X kg), constituting a 20% share of total exports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw silk exports, with a CAGR of -6.7% from 2012 to 2022. Norway (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden increased by +80 percentage points.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) emerged as the largest raw silk supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden stood at -4.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, raw silk export price increased by +12.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 133%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden totaled $X per ton.

Raw Silk Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2022, the amount of raw silk imported in Scandinavia declined rapidly to X kg, falling by -23% against 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 341%. The volume of import peaked at X kg in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raw silk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 315%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Norway (X kg) was the major importer of raw silk, creating 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X kg), constituting an 11% share of total imports. Finland (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Norway was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw silk imports, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012 to 2022. Sweden (-1.2%) and Finland (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Norway (+29 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Sweden (-9.3 p.p.) and Finland (-19.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Norway ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw silk in Scandinavia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports.

In Norway, raw silk imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+2.1% per year) and Finland (-22.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
