In general, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 93%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sweden was the largest exporter of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2021. Denmark (X kg) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (9.5%).
Exports from Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -8.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Norway (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee substitutes supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sweden was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (-23.8% per year) and Norway (+22.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed buoyant growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes increased by 44% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Denmark dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons) and Sweden (X tons), together achieving a 14% share of total imports. The following importers - Finland (X tons) and Iceland (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Denmark decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Norway (+26.7%), Iceland (+25.6%) and Finland (+18.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sweden (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland increased by +7.8, +3.9, +2.5 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest roasted coffee substitutes importing markets in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Finland and Iceland, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Among the main importing countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 278% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
