For the third consecutive year, the Scandinavia cotton bag market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -2.3% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -23.1% against 2018 indices. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. Denmark represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 52% of total imports. Sweden (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (14%) and Finland (5.5%). Iceland (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Denmark increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iceland (+30.9%) and Finland (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iceland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2021. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Norway (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Denmark (+12 p.p.), Iceland (+3.3 p.p.) and Finland (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-5.1 p.p.) and Norway (-13.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 90% of total imports. Finland and Iceland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.7%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iceland, with a CAGR of +34.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
