Semiconductor Device Market Size in Scandinavia

After four years of decline, the Scandinavia semiconductor device market increased by 4.6% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -46.7% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. Finland (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.9% share, followed by Norway (5.3%).

Exports from Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Norway (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Finland (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden increased by +13 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden totaled +12.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+11.9% per year) and Norway (+0.6% per year).

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per unit in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 88%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas purchases of semiconductor devices increased by 4.9% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after six years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 11%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the key importer of semiconductor devices in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Norway (X units) and Finland (X units), together creating a 52% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Norway (with a CAGR of +18.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 73%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
