In 2021, the Scandinavia semiconductor LED market increased by 17% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, semiconductor LED production dropped markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6,028% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Exports in Scandinavia

In 2021, semiconductor led exports in Scandinavia soared to X units, with an increase of 50% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor LED exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 43%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Finland (X units), committing a 32% share of total exports. Norway (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -18.2% from 2012 to 2021. Finland (-2.3%) and Norway (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Finland (+23 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-22.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest semiconductor LED supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden totaled -12.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (-4.8% per year) and Norway (-25.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -22.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 80%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Finland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, approx. X units of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) were imported in Scandinavia; rising by 31% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, semiconductor LED imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +115.3% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X units) represented the main importer of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), comprising 73% of total imports. Finland (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Norway (12%).

Imports into Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +36.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+36.5%) and Norway (+32.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden increased by +2.8 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) in Scandinavia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden totaled +6.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Finland (+2.3% per year) and Norway (+7.3% per year).

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per unit in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a precipitous slump.
