Exports in Scandinavia

In 2021, approx. X tons of soya beans were exported in Scandinavia; waning by -23.3% against the year before. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 963% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soya bean exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 353% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Denmark dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), generating a 9.3% share of total exports.

Denmark was also the fastest-growing in terms of the soya beans exports, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012 to 2021. Sweden (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Denmark increased by +28 percentage points.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest soya bean supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

In Denmark, soya bean exports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+3.1%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of soya beans increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, soya bean imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Norway prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2021. Denmark (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Finland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons). All these countries together took near 15% share of total imports.

Imports into Norway increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+19.7%) and Sweden (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Norway (+6.6 p.p.), Finland (+3.9 p.p.) and Sweden (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Denmark (-12.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Norway ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported soya beans in Scandinavia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 7.5% share.

In Norway, soya bean imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+8.4% per year) and Denmark (-7.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 44% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
