Plastic Support Market Size in Scandinavia

For the third year in a row, the Scandinavia plastic support market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.5% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic support production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 34%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Scandinavia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics decreased by -16.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, plastic support exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together comprising a 14% share of total exports.

Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics. At the same time, Norway (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2022. Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Norway increased by +4.5 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest plastic support supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports.

In Sweden, plastic support exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Finland (+1.4% per year) and Norway (+6.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic support imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Sweden represented the main importer of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 63% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together creating a 37% share of total imports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spools, cops and similar supports of plastics imports, with a CAGR of +6.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+6.9%) and Norway (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Sweden (+7.6 p.p.) and Finland (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Norway (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Norway ($X) and Finland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +3.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -17.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
