For the fourth consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded decline in overseas shipments of sweet potatoes, which decreased by -69.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4,639%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sweet potato exports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 1,191%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Denmark represented the key exporter of sweet potatoes in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), constituting a 10% share of total exports.

Exports from Denmark decreased at an average annual rate of -16.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sweden (+54.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +54.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Sweden (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Denmark (-11.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest sweet potato supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Denmark stood at -5.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 216% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 502%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+18.4%).

Sweet Potato Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, overseas purchases of sweet potatoes decreased by -4.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 57%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sweet potato imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 92%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons) represented the key importer of sweet potatoes in Scandinavia, achieving 77% of total import. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons) and Iceland (X tons), together comprising a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Finland ($X) and Norway ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark and Iceland, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +28.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Finland ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton), while Iceland ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
