Tomato Market Size in Scandinavia

The Scandinavia tomato market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, picking up by 6.3% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, shipments abroad of tomatoes increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Denmark represented the key exporter of tomatoes in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Finland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 42% share of total exports. Iceland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Iceland (with a CAGR of +38.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a 9.5% share.

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 37%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Tomato imports rose modestly to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 1.7% against 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the key importer of tomatoes in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 50% of total imports in 2021. Denmark (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (14%) and Norway (14%).
