In 2021, shipments abroad of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -11.7% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates, namely Norway, Denmark and Sweden, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Finland (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplying countries in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +26.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 12% to X cubic meters in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 24%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Denmark (X cubic meters) was the major importer of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates, generating 43% of total imports. Finland (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Sweden (23%) and Norway (5.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Denmark ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates in Scandinavia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 12% share.
In Denmark, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+2.3% per year) and Sweden (-6.2% per year).
