Exports in Scandinavia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of yams decreased by -58.5% to X kg in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 283%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, yams exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 436%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of yams, namely Sweden, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the yams exports, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) also remains the largest yams supplier in Scandinavia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden stood at +8.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -33.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Sweden.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sweden amounted to +5.6% per year.

Imports in Scandinavia

For the third consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of yams, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 181% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, yams imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the major importer of yams, making up 56% of total imports. Norway (X tons) took a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (19%).

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the yams imports, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+12.9%) and Norway (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden increased by +47 percentage points.

In value terms, the largest yams importing markets in Scandinavia were Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X).

Sweden, with a CAGR of +29.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
