Zinc Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Scandinavia zinc market, when its value increased by 29% to $X. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The biggest shipments were from Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons), together recording 100% of total export.

In value terms, Finland ($X) and Norway ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 25% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Finland amounted to $X per ton.

Zinc Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, overseas purchases of zinc increased by 4.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 6.7%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, zinc imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sweden represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), mixing up a 21% share of total imports. Finland (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to zinc imports into Sweden stood at -3.6%. Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Denmark (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Denmark (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported zinc in Scandinavia, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.
