Cabbage Market Size in Serbia

The Serbian cabbage market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cabbage Production in Serbia

In value terms, cabbage production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in Serbia fell to X tons per ha, reducing by -1.8% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The cabbage yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cabbage harvested area in Serbia reached X ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable slump. The cabbage harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Serbia, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, cabbage exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), threefold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Croatia totaled +23.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+35.4% per year) and Russia (-20.1% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Serbia, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovenia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Croatia stood at +26.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+40.4% per year) and Russia (-16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cabbage export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 29%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage Imports

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, approx. X tons of cabbage and other brassicas were imported into Serbia; with a decrease of -2% on 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 83%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

North Macedonia (X tons), Albania (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cabbage imports to Serbia, together accounting for 90% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage suppliers to Serbia were North Macedonia ($X), Albania ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 83% of total imports.

Albania, with a CAGR of +69.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cabbage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 59% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+14.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
