Exports from Serbia

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of sour cherries, when their volume increased by 26% to X tons. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 246%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sour cherry exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 155%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of sour cherry exports from Serbia, together accounting for 81% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +71.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for sour cherries exports from Serbia, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia amounted to +22.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+82.2% per year) and Germany (-11.5% per year).

The average sour cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) constituted the largest sour cherry supplier to Serbia, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, sour cherry imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia stood at +184.4%.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sour cherries to Serbia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average sour cherry import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 81% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
