For the third consecutive year, the Serbian market for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -38.7% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified decreased by -5.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 23,074%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 13,143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified exports from Serbia, accounting for a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain (X kg), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands totaled +58.9%.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified exports from Serbia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands amounted to +59.8%.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 116%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.6%).

Imports into Serbia
In 2022, overseas purchases of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified decreased by -16% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 187%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons) was the main supplier of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified to Serbia, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +55.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+55.5% per year) and Turkey (+13.5% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of citrus fruits not elsewhere classified to Serbia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +53.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+45.9% per year) and Turkey (+5.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for citrus fruits not elsewhere classified amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -19.1% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, citrus fruits not elsewhere classified import price increased by +44.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 78%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Albania (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
