Cucumber And Gherkin Market Size in Serbia

The Serbian cucumber and gherkin market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, growing by 95% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a deep slump. Cucumber and gherkin consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cucumber And Gherkin Production in Serbia

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cucumbers and gherkins in Serbia expanded to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 1.5% on 2021. In general, the yield, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average cucumber and gherkin yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the cucumber and gherkin harvested area in Serbia expanded slightly to X ha, with an increase of 2.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the cucumber and gherkin harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Cucumber And Gherkin Exports

Exports from Serbia

In 2022, shipments abroad of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -34.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 308%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from Serbia, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +45.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+46.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+27.6% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for cucumbers and gherkins exports from Serbia, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at +51.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+55.2% per year) and Austria (+68.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin export price decreased by -6.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 38%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cucumber And Gherkin Imports

Imports into Serbia

Cucumber and gherkin imports into Serbia totaled X tons in 2022, rising by 6.8% against 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.0% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Albania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cucumber and gherkin to Serbia, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from Albania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), fivefold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Albania amounted to +49.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+12.3% per year) and Croatia (+125.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest cucumber and gherkin suppliers to Serbia were Albania ($X), Greece ($X) and Croatia ($X), together comprising 79% of total imports. Spain, Italy, Germany and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +238.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cucumber and gherkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin import price increased by +20.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
