Date Market Size in Serbia

In 2022, the Serbian date market decreased by -13.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a significant increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of dates decreased by -18.4% to X tons, falling for the sixth year in a row after five years of growth. In general, total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -27.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, date exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 71%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Montenegro (X tons) was the main destination for date exports from Serbia, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, date exports to Montenegro exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bulgaria (X kg), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X kg), with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Montenegro stood at +12.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+3.0% per year) and Hungary (-14.6% per year).

In value terms, Montenegro ($X) remains the key foreign market for dates exports from Serbia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Montenegro amounted to +23.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+11.7% per year) and Bulgaria (-9.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average date export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+30.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Date Imports

Imports into Serbia

After ten years of growth, purchases abroad of dates decreased by -22.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, date imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 98%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Iran (X tons) constituted the largest date supplier to Serbia, with a 80% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Iran totaled +57.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+55.9% per year) and Tunisia (-13.0% per year).

In value terms, Iran ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dates to Serbia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Iran stood at +63.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (-6.8% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+21.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
