In 2022, overseas shipments of beans (dry) increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry bean exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Bulgaria (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Montenegro (X tons) were the main destinations of dry bean exports from Serbia, with a combined 67% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +190.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, the amount of beans (dry) imported into Serbia soared to X tons, increasing by 18% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, dry bean imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kyrgyzstan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dry bean to Serbia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, dry bean imports from Kyrgyzstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), twofold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kyrgyzstan stood at -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+20.8% per year) and Egypt (+6.8% per year).

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beans (dry) to Serbia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kyrgyzstan stood at +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+27.8% per year) and Poland (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average dry bean import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry bean import price increased by +113.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+21.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
