Eggplant Market Size in Serbia

The Serbian eggplant market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average eggplant yield in Serbia totaled X tons per ha, standing approx. at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1.3%. The eggplant yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Exports from Serbia

Eggplant exports from Serbia surged to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 270% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 1,146%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,346% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main destinations of eggplant exports from Serbia, together accounting for 81% of total exports. Montenegro, Sweden and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Croatia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for eggplant exported from Serbia worldwide, together accounting for 72% of total exports. Montenegro, Sweden and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Montenegro, with a CAGR of +5.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average eggplant export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant export price increased by +62.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+10.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Eggplant Imports

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of eggplants (aubergines), when their volume decreased by -18.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 53%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, eggplant imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of eggplant imports to Serbia, together comprising 74% of total imports. Turkey, the Netherlands, Albania and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Albania (with a CAGR of +51.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Greece ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest eggplant suppliers to Serbia, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Turkey, the Netherlands, Albania and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Albania, with a CAGR of +66.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average eggplant import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant import price increased by +81.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 31%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Albania (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
