The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Serbia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal, when their volume decreased by -50.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 92%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), Montenegro (X tons) and North Macedonia (X tons) were the main destinations of fresh beef carcase exports from Serbia, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest markets for fresh beef carcase exported from Serbia were Italy ($X), Montenegro ($X) and North Macedonia ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.

North Macedonia, with a CAGR of +11.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average fresh beef carcase export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Italy ($X per ton) and Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) and North Macedonia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, purchases abroad of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 630%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 524% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fresh beef carcase to Serbia, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh beef carcase imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Croatia (X tons), twofold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +7.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (+129.7% per year) and Italy (+49.7% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal to Serbia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +11.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (+116.3% per year) and Italy (+57.8% per year).

In 2022, the average fresh beef carcase import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
