Lard Market Size in Serbia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Serbian lard market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. Overall, consumption recorded a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Lard Production in Serbia

In value terms, lard production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. Lard production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Serbia

In 2022, overseas shipments of lard decreased by -2.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 130%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lard exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 158% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Montenegro (X tons) was the main destination for lard exports from Serbia, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, lard exports to Montenegro exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Montenegro totaled +5.3%.

In value terms, Montenegro ($X) remains the key foreign market for lard exports from Serbia, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Montenegro stood at +7.2%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average lard export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Montenegro stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Lard Imports

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, overseas purchases of lard decreased by -13.3% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 78%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, lard imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 109%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) was the main supplier of lard to Serbia, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Montenegro (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled +26.9%.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lard to Serbia, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Montenegro ($X), with a 1.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy totaled +30.8%.

Import Prices by Country

The average lard import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lard import price increased by +68.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 45%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Montenegro amounted to $X per ton.
