Leek Market Size in Serbia
The Serbian leek market contracted rapidly to $X in 2022, reducing by -25% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports from Serbia
In 2022, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -51.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 453% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leek exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 662% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for leek exports from Serbia, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, leek exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia amounted to +75.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+42.7% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+42.4% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports from Serbia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia totaled +93.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+49.5% per year) and Romania (+52.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average leek export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 157%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Montenegro ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+12.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Leek Imports
Imports into Serbia
Leek imports into Serbia contracted notably to X tons in 2022, reducing by -25% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, leek imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 223% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Albania (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of leek to Serbia, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, leek imports from Albania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Albania totaled +42.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+6.8% per year) and Italy (+96.5% per year).
In value terms, Albania ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest leek suppliers to Serbia, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Belgium, Croatia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +99.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average leek import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
