Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X kg) was the main destination for mate exports from Serbia, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, mate exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Montenegro (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +24.4%.

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for mate exports from Serbia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Montenegro ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +23.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average mate export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 117% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Montenegro stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Mate Imports

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, approx. X kg of mate were imported into Serbia; increasing by 81% against 2021. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 416% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X kg. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 417% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Portugal (X kg), Brazil (X kg) and Germany (X kg) were the main suppliers of mate imports to Serbia.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mate to Serbia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+24.2% per year) and Germany (+38.6% per year).

The average mate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 128% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a resilient increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
