Pimenta Pepper Market Size in Serbia

In 2022, the Serbian pimenta pepper market decreased by -0.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +47.9% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Pimenta Pepper Production in Serbia

In value terms, pimenta pepper production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 9.5%. Pimenta pepper production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of pimenta pepper in Serbia shrank modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 2.2%. Over the period under review, the average pimenta pepper yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of pimenta pepper were harvested in Serbia; flattening at the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pimenta pepper production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports from Serbia

For the third consecutive year, Serbia recorded decline in shipments abroad of pimenta pepper, which decreased by -1.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 50%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of pimenta pepper exports from Serbia, together comprising 72% of total exports. Montenegro, North Macedonia, Croatia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +46.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pimenta pepper exported from Serbia were Germany ($X), Hungary ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), together accounting for 69% of total exports. Montenegro, Croatia, Slovakia, North Macedonia, Switzerland, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Switzerland, with a CAGR of +48.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average pimenta pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, purchases abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -11.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 107%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Serbia, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, pimenta pepper imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +35.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+32.4% per year) and Bulgaria (+5.9% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Serbia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +34.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+24.8% per year) and Hungary (+74.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average pimenta pepper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
