The Serbian rye market reached $X in 2022, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Rye Production in Serbia
In value terms, rye production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 347% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The average yield of rye in Serbia dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -7.2% compared with the year before. Overall, the yield indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, rye yield increased by +20.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average rye yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of rye were harvested in Serbia; falling by -2.2% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the rye harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Rye Exports
Exports from Serbia
In 2022, exports of rye from Serbia fell significantly to X tons, waning by -25.4% against 2021. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2,038% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, rye exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 677% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for rye exports from Serbia, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, rye exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Switzerland (X tons), with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia amounted to -22.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+6.2% per year) and Switzerland (+8.8% per year).
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for rye exports from Serbia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by North Macedonia, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia stood at +19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+8.6% per year) and North Macedonia (+119.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average rye export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 280% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was North Macedonia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+53.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rye Imports
Imports into Serbia
In 2022, approx. X tons of rye were imported into Serbia; jumping by 79% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 464%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rye imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 405% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Hungary (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main suppliers of rye imports to Serbia, together accounting for 96% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +89.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rye to Serbia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +94.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-8.9% per year) and Moldova (0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average rye import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 319%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+37.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
