Transport Container Market Size in Serbia

In 2022, the Serbian transport container market decreased by -42.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of transport containers decreased by -40.7% to X units for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 246% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, transport container exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 153%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X units) was the main destination for transport container exports from Serbia, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, transport container exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X units), fourfold. Bosnia and Herzegovina (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia totaled +119.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+29.4% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+116.2% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for transport containers exports from Serbia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Montenegro, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Slovenia totaled +102.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+136.6% per year) and Montenegro (+151.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average transport container export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 105% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of transport containers decreased by -18.8% to X units, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 493% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, transport container imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 438% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X units), Germany (X units) and Montenegro (X units) were the main suppliers of transport container imports to Serbia, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Hungary, Turkey, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +45.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Turkey ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest transport container suppliers to Serbia, with a combined 51% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +47.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average transport container import price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a strong expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the price for Montenegro ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
