The Serbian market for wood boxes, crates and cable drums skyrocketed to $X in 2022, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas shipments of wood boxes, crates and cable drums increased by 49% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +82.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units), Austria (X units) and Italy (X units) were the main destinations of wood box and cable drum exports from Serbia, with a combined 67% share of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Spain, North Macedonia, Hungary, Belgium and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +76.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for wood box and cable drum exported from Serbia worldwide, together comprising 67% of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Spain, North Macedonia, Hungary, Belgium and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +88.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for wood boxes, crates and cable drums stood at $X per unit in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood box and cable drum export price decreased by -7.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Hungary ($X per unit) and North Macedonia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per unit) and Spain ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Serbia

In 2022, purchases abroad of wood boxes, crates and cable drums increased by 210% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports posted a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 197%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units) constituted the largest wood box and cable drum supplier to Serbia, with a 20% share of total imports. Moreover, wood box and cable drum imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X units), fourfold. The Czech Republic (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +52.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+17.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (+16.1% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood boxes, crates and cable drums to Serbia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany totaled +77.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+35.6% per year) and Turkey (+81.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for wood boxes, crates and cable drums stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -22.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 43%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per unit), while the price for Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+33.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
