Mate Market Size in Singapore

The Singaporean mate market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after four years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mate Production in Singapore

In value terms, mate production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 816%. Mate production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of mate in Singapore was estimated at less than X kg per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, mate exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for mate exports from Singapore, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, mate exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Brunei Darussalam (X tons), twofold. Australia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hong Kong SAR stood at -2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (-3.8% per year) and Australia (-14.8% per year).

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for mate exports from Singapore, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR amounted to -3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (-1.4% per year) and Australia (-19.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average mate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($X per ton) and Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Singapore

In 2022, supplies from abroad of mate increased by 34% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 202%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 534% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Australia (X tons), India (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of mate imports to Singapore, together comprising 86% of total imports. The United States, Switzerland, China, Taiwan (Chinese), the UK, South Korea, the Philippines and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +1,640.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mate suppliers to Singapore were India ($X), Australia ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 86% share of total imports. Malaysia, Switzerland, Taiwan (Chinese), China, South Korea, the UK, the Philippines and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.2%.

Switzerland, with a CAGR of +2,048.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average mate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 176%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+28.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
