The Slovak market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander expanded markedly to $X in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +23.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 189%. Anise, badian, fennel and coriander production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
In 2022, the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield in Slovakia declined slightly to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 176% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Slovakia amounted to X ha, surging by 1.8% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area decreased by -1.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to anise, badian, fennel and coriander production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -25.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 34%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+6.8% per year) and Poland (-8.0% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Slovakia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 2.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+5.2% per year) and Romania (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2022, purchases abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander increased by 5.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +23.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Albania (X tons) were the main suppliers of anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 55% of total imports. Finland, Poland, Austria, Russia and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander suppliers to Slovakia were the Czech Republic ($X), Lithuania ($X) and Finland ($X), together comprising 50% of total imports. Albania, Poland, Austria, Russia and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander import price increased by +44.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
