Apple Market Size in Slovakia

The Slovak apple market declined to $X in 2021, waning by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced slump. Apple consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for apple exports from Slovakia, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, apple exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic amounted to -4.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+6.0% per year) and Austria (+1.1% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for apples exports from Slovakia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 7.5% share.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of apples decreased by -23% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, apple imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of apple imports to Slovakia, with a combined 67% share of total imports.
