In 2022, the Slovak barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, barley exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 83% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Austria (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Slovakia, with a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, barley exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), twofold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria totaled +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+1.8% per year) and Hungary (-9.6% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for barley exports from Slovakia, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Austria amounted to +7.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-0.4% per year) and Hungary (-10.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average barley export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of barley increased by 29% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports showed tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, barley imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest barley supplier to Slovakia, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hungary (X tons), twofold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic stood at +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-1.5% per year) and Ukraine (+38.7% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Slovakia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic totaled +3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-0.5% per year) and Ukraine (+47.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 42% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
