In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovak market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass, when its value decreased by -42.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Production of Bottles, Jars And Other Containers Of Glass in Slovakia
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container production fell notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 302% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports from Slovakia
In 2021, shipments abroad of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 14% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +62.4% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X units), Poland (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) were the main destinations of glass bottle, jar and container exports from Slovakia, with a combined 53% share of total exports. France, Hungary, Switzerland, South Africa, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Greece, Italy and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +536.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), France ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest markets for glass bottle, jar and container exported from Slovakia worldwide, together accounting for 43% of total exports. Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Greece and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +300.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for bottles, jars and other containers of glass stood at $X per unit in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Bottles, Jars And Other Containers Of Glass
Imports into Slovakia
For the third consecutive year, Slovakia recorded growth in overseas purchases of bottles, jars and other containers of glass, which increased by 45% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Czech Republic (X units) constituted the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplier to Slovakia, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, glass bottle, jar and container imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X units), twofold. Germany (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +11.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+48.4% per year) and Germany (+10.3% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest glass bottle, jar and container suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 72% of total imports.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +31.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for bottles, jars and other containers of glass amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -22.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
