In 2022, the Slovak cabbage market increased by 5.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, the average cabbage yield in Slovakia surged to X tons per ha, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of cabbage and other brassicas increased by 39% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 393%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 461%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Slovakia, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, cabbage exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), more than tenfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic totaled -4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-13.0% per year) and Germany (+18.7% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Slovakia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic totaled -3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+32.3% per year) and Germany (+17.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cabbage export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage export price decreased by -11.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, purchases abroad of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by -0.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 37%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of cabbage imports to Slovakia, with a combined 61% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Hungary, Spain and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +26.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Poland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest cabbage suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 52% share of total imports. Germany, Spain, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

The average cabbage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
