In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovak canned vegetable market, when its value decreased by -26.9% to $X. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of canned vegetables decreased by -2.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for canned vegetable exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, canned vegetable exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic totaled +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+51.8% per year) and Hungary (+20.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for canned vegetable exported from Slovakia were the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X), together comprising 75% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +47.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average canned vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 33%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2022, the amount of canned vegetables imported into Slovakia dropped dramatically to X tons, falling by -21.9% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned vegetable imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned vegetable imports to Slovakia, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Poland, Spain, Switzerland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned vegetables to Slovakia, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic amounted to -1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (-0.4% per year) and Poland (+1.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average canned vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
