Cheese Market Size in Slovakia
For the fourth consecutive year, the Slovak cheese market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 15% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Cheese Production in Slovakia
In value terms, cheese production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia
In 2021, approx. X tons of cheese were exported from Slovakia; growing by 3.7% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cheese exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +69.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 29%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hungary (X tons), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +7.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+12.0% per year) and Hungary (+6.4% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for cheese exported from Slovakia were the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Belgium, France, the United States, Poland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 24%.
The United States, with a CAGR of +3,332.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average cheese export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 14%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2021, imports of cheese into Slovakia rose sharply to X tons, surging by 15% on 2020. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +125.6% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cheese imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese imports to Slovakia, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +35.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cheese suppliers to Slovakia were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 82% of total imports. Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +37.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average cheese import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
