Exports from Slovakia
In 2022, shipments abroad of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -19.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 370% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chili and pepper exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 211%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for chili and pepper exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, chili and pepper exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary stood at +38.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-9.8% per year) and Germany (+24.7% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chilies and peppers (green) exports from Slovakia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hungary amounted to +30.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-15.2% per year) and Germany (+17.7% per year).

In 2022, the average chili and pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2022, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) imported into Slovakia stood at X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -7.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +42.0% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of chili and pepper imports to Slovakia, together comprising 51% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Morocco, the Netherlands, Serbia, Poland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +68.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chilies and peppers (green) to Slovakia, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Greece ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with an 11% share.
