After two years of decline, the Slovak cider, perry and mead market increased by 55% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a deep slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +25.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. Cider, perry and mead production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia

Cider, perry and mead exports from Slovakia contracted notably to X litres in 2021, reducing by -15.4% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 632%. The exports peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 658% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X litres) was the main destination for cider, perry and mead exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, cider, perry and mead exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X litres), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X litres), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic totaled +35.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+29.4% per year) and Austria (+29.4% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages exports from Slovakia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic amounted to +34.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+31.2% per year) and Austria (+32.9% per year).

The average cider, perry and mead export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, declining by -12.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 27%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

Cider, perry and mead imports into Slovakia dropped to X litres in 2021, with a decrease of -7.8% on the previous year. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 363%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X litres), Poland (X litres) and the Czech Republic (X litres) were the main suppliers of cider, perry and mead imports to Slovakia, with a combined 89% share of total imports. Germany and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +73.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages to Slovakia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Poland stood at +24.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-4.0% per year) and Hungary (+0.1% per year).

The average cider, perry and mead import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
