In 2021, shipments abroad of composite paper and paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 485% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from Slovakia, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria stood at +55.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (-7.1% per year) and Germany (+24.3% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X), Germany ($X) and Slovenia ($X) were the largest markets for composite paperboard exported from Slovakia worldwide, together accounting for 83% of total exports.

Austria, with a CAGR of +67.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average composite paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -34.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 248% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, approx. X tons of composite paper and paperboard were imported into Slovakia; jumping by 18% on 2020. In general, imports, however, saw a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest composite paperboard supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, composite paperboard imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X tons), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-0.0% per year) and Austria (+45.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the largest composite paperboard suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Austria, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, Austria, with a CAGR of +49.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average composite paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
