In 2022, overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -50% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 278% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 170%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from Slovakia, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary amounted to +44.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-15.8% per year) and Spain (+85.1% per year).

For the fourth consecutive year, Slovakia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cucumbers and gherkins, which decreased by -8.3% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +2.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cucumber and gherkin to Slovakia, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Greece (X tons), sixfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+24.3% per year) and Hungary (+24.2% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cucumbers and gherkins to Slovakia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Greece ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (+23.9% per year) and Hungary (+32.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average cucumber and gherkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin import price increased by +86.7% against 2015 indices.
