Densified Wood Market Size in Slovakia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Slovak densified wood market, when its value decreased by -1.1% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced setback. Densified wood consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, densified wood production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of densified wood decreased by -93.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 866% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, densified wood exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 493%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for densified wood exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, densified wood exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Czech Republic (X kg), with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary stood at -7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+2.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (-44.4% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for densified wood exports from Slovakia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Hungary amounted to -13.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-3.0% per year) and Poland (-59.1% per year).

In 2022, the average densified wood export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 122%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, imports of densified wood into Slovakia reduced dramatically to X tons, with a decrease of -21.4% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 268%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, densified wood imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 204%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of densified wood imports to Slovakia, with a combined 51% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +72.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest densified wood suppliers to Slovakia were the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
