The Slovak plastic tableware and kitchenware market reduced rapidly to $X in 2022, falling by -36.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild expansion. Over the period under review, exports posted a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from Slovakia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria totaled +34.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-1.0% per year) and Hungary (-2.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic tableware and kitchenware exported from Slovakia were Austria ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 79% of total exports. Poland, Germany and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +50.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average plastic tableware and kitchenware export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -23.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware, when their volume decreased by -29.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic tableware and kitchenware imports to Slovakia, with a combined 40% share of total imports. Germany, Denmark, Vietnam, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovenia, India, Turkey and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 52%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +78.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware suppliers to Slovakia were China ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 41% of total imports. Poland, Vietnam, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Hungary, Turkey and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +62.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic tableware and kitchenware import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
