The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dog and cat food exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 36%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of dog and cat food exports from Slovakia, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Austria and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.6%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +112.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for dog and cat food exported from Slovakia were Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 13%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Austria, with a CAGR of +68.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average dog and cat food export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 28%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (-2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2021, overseas purchases of dog and cat food decreased by -0.5% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
In value terms, dog and cat food imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dog and cat food to Slovakia, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, dog and cat food imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic stood at +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+6.5% per year) and Germany (+14.4% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dog and cat food to Slovakia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic stood at +20.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+10.0% per year) and Germany (+16.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average dog and cat food import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, dog and cat food import price increased by +53.8% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
