Dry Vegetable Market Size in Slovakia

For the third year in a row, the Slovak dry vegetable market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of dry vegetables increased by 13% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 126%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 107% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for dry vegetable exports from Slovakia, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, dry vegetable exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), sevenfold. Romania (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +11.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+2.4% per year) and Romania (+16.7% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for dry vegetables exports from Slovakia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Romania, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic stood at +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+6.5% per year) and Romania (+21.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average dry vegetable export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Romania ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of dry vegetables, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 29%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), China (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of dry vegetable imports to Slovakia, together comprising 63% of total imports. Austria, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +25.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest dry vegetable suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 62% share of total imports. France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Austria, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +22.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average dry vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 29%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
