In 2022, the average durum wheat yield in Slovakia dropped slightly to X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39%. Exports from Slovakia
In 2022, the amount of durum wheat exported from Slovakia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 34% against the year before. In general, exports enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 119% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 107% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Slovakia, with a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary amounted to +21.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+25.8% per year) and Poland (+20.3% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest markets for durum wheat exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 66% share of total exports.
Germany, with a CAGR of +30.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +60.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 33%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Durum Wheat Imports
Imports into Slovakia
For the third year in a row, Slovakia recorded growth in purchases abroad of durum wheat, which increased by 30% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 157%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, durum wheat imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 140%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Hungary (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main suppliers of durum wheat imports to Slovakia, together comprising 63% of total imports. Germany, Austria, Greece, France and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +82.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest durum wheat suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Germany, France, Austria, Greece and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +153.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+39.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
