The Slovak fig market declined remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -31.9% against the previous year. Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of fig exports from Slovakia, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Switzerland, Hungary, Italy and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +969.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average fig export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, fig imports into Slovakia reduced remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -15.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 87%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, fig imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the main supplier of fig to Slovakia, with a 94% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 1.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled +7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-6.1% per year) and Greece (-26.4% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of figs to Slovakia, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Greece ($X), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey totaled +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (-24.3% per year) and Germany (-27.0% per year).

In 2022, the average fig import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 48%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
