Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for fresh pork carcase exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh pork carcase exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary stood at +2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+10.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (-3.5% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat exports from Slovakia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Hungary totaled -5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+6.4% per year) and the Czech Republic (-8.3% per year).

The average fresh pork carcase export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 17%. Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 132%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh pork carcase imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 67% of total imports. Spain, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.4%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +36.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest fresh pork carcase suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Spain, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.7%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
