The Slovak hairpin market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 423%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 161%. The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of hairpin exports from Slovakia, together comprising 73% of total exports. Russia, Romania, Hungary and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (with a CAGR of +376.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 51%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Georgia (+70.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers increased by 28% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +40.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), China (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of hairpin imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +128.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
