In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovak canned food market, when its value decreased by -12.3% to $X. In general, consumption showed a mild decline. Canned food consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, canned food production declined sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Canned food production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, canned food exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +79.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of canned food exports from Slovakia, together accounting for 65% of total exports. Austria, France, Germany, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Romania, Greece, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +63.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) constituted the largest markets for canned food exported from Slovakia worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports. Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
France, with a CAGR of +75.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
For the fourth year in a row, Slovakia recorded growth in purchases abroad of canned food, which increased by 3.3% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, canned food imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +38.6% against 2014 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2020, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of canned food to Slovakia, with a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, canned food imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+2.1% per year) and Germany (+5.0% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned food to Slovakia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic amounted to +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+5.5% per year) and Poland (+3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2020, the average canned food import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 8% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2020.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
